ADHD/ASD Referrals

Adult ADHD/ASD NHS

The local demand for adult ADHD assessments has risen sharply, and Berkshire Healthcare’s ADHD service is now under significant pressure. As a result, Berkshire Healthcare and the Integrated Care Boards, have taken the difficult decision to temporarily stop accepting new referrals to the Adult ADHD Service from 1 December 2025.

This will allow Berkshire Healthcare to prioritise annual ADHD reviews and respond to internal waits for people who have been diagnosed as having ADHD and are currently waiting for medication to be prescribed.

From 1 December 2025, referrals to the Adult ADHD Service will temporarily close to new referrals. During this period we recognise the impact this may have on our patients seeking assessment. We will keep you informed throughout this process and will provide clear updates as they are received from BHFT. Shared Care

At this point we would like to inform you about our approach to shared care prescribing at Woodley Centre Surgery. Shared care prescribing occurs when a specialist initiates a medication or treatment, and your GP is asked to take over the ongoing prescribing and monitoring of that treatment under a Shared Care Agreement.

While shared care arrangements are often beneficial in ensuring seamless care, there are instances where our surgery may not be able to participate in such agreements. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to agree to a shared care arrangement for private and Right to Choose patients for ADHD/ASD.

This decision is not taken lightly and is based on considerations, with the focus being on safety and quality of your treatment, such as:

· Clinical Safety: Our GPs must feel confident that prescribing the recommended medication falls within their expertise and that appropriate monitoring can be maintained.

· Specialist Input: Some medications may require ongoing specialist supervision that we cannot replicate in a primary care setting.

· Resource Limitations: Ensuring safe shared care requires additional resources and support, which may not always be feasible.

If you are diagnosed by a private or Right to Choose provider, and prescribed medication which you wish to take, we may be able to refer you to the NHS medication pathway in the future, but please note there is a multi year waiting list for this service. We can not change this.

If you have any questions or concerns about shared care prescribing, or if you need assistance navigating this process, please do not hesitate to contact us via Anima.
