HPV Vaccination Catch up campaign
If you are or know an individual who missed there HPV vaccine at school they can still get vaccinated in the surgery until 31st March 2026.
The HPV vaccine is offered to boys and girls from year 8 in school to help protect them from high-risk HPV related cancers. HPV is linked to over 90% of cervical cancers in England. It can be prevented with one dose of the HPV vaccination and regular screening. HPV is not just about cervical cancer, it can cause a range of cancers such as head and neck (mouth and throat) and penile cancers.
There has been an 84% reduction in cervical cancers in women vaccinated aged 12 to 13 years against HPV when compared to previous generations.
Eligible individuals are:
• all females born on or before 1 September 2009 – up to their 25th birthday
• males born from 1 September 2006 to 31 August 2009 (inclusive).
While vaccination is most effective before sexual activity begins, it can still be given once sexually active as it still provides protection against other types of HPV you/they may not have been exposed to yet. The vaccine offers significant benefit in preventing future HPV-related infections and cancers so it’s still recommended to get it even after sexual contact.
